food for thought

Casualties

You can filter the entire list for "Non-Hostile" deaths...there are quite a few ways to shorten your lifespan in this world. Even sergeants get heart attacks. Man knows not his time. But it's pretty sure to be closer in Iraq.

Also, from the news section of the same page.

It would be more accurate to say that the Expected Value of the Lifespan variable is much smaller for a soldier in an armed conflict than for soldier or civilian during peacetime.

None know when they die, but we the young often assume that it is very distant.

But every soldier lives with the knowledge that he can't expect to live forever.

It is food for thought--even when we hear news of death by heart attack.

Or when we hear news like the stuff detailed here, or here.

Everything that a wartime soldier does he does under the cloud of personal danger.
